JD Gyms Telford, located within the busy Telford Bridge Retail Park, required a comprehensive roof refurbishment programme to address ageing rooflights, deteriorating gutters and the need for long‑term protection across the metal roof surfaces. As a high‑footfall fitness facility operating seven days a week, the building must remain safe, weatherproof and structurally reliable.

Cladding Coatings were appointed to deliver a full package of works designed to improve natural light, enhance roof performance and provide a robust, warranty‑backed coating system that will protect the building for decades. This project builds on our ongoing relationship with JD Gyms, as we have already completed successful refurbishment works at their Enfield and Blackpool sites, demonstrating their continued trust in our expertise across multiple locations.

Before any refurbishment work could begin, establishing safe access to the roof was essential. The building’s height, rooflight layout and operational environment required a carefully planned access strategy. Our team installed a full access tower to allow controlled movement onto the roof and ensure all materials could be safely transported. Perimeter edge protection was fitted around the working area to maintain a secure environment for the installation team throughout the project.

Safety netting was installed beneath all rooflights. This is a critical precaution when working around existing GRP rooflight units, as it ensures that operatives are protected from fall risks while the old rooflights are removed and replaced. With these measures in place, the team could proceed with confidence, knowing that the site met all required safety standards.

The existing GRP rooflights at JD Gyms Telford had reached the end of their serviceable life. Over time, rooflights can become brittle, discoloured and less effective at allowing natural light into the building. In some cases, ageing rooflights also pose a safety risk if they no longer meet non‑fragile standards. The client required a full replacement programme to ensure the building remained compliant and benefited from improved daylighting.

Our team began by stripping out the top skin of all existing GRP rooflights. Seventeen units were carefully removed and lifted from the roof, with all redundant materials cleared away to maintain a tidy and safe working environment. New GRP rooflights were then installed in the exact positions of the originals, ensuring consistency with the building’s existing layout and appearance.

Each new rooflight was fitted with fresh fixings and high‑performance sealant to guarantee a secure and watertight installation. Importantly, the new units were specified as Class 3 Non‑Fragile when new, providing the client with reassurance that the rooflights meet modern safety standards and will perform reliably for years to come. Once installation was complete, all debris and waste materials were removed from site, leaving the roof clean and ready for the next phase of refurbishment.

The guttering at JD Gyms Telford required significant attention due to the build‑up of debris, silt and general contamination that had accumulated over time. Effective gutter performance is essential for preventing water ingress, protecting the building envelope and ensuring that roof coatings can perform as intended. To address these issues, Cladding Coatings installed the Weatherfast Gutter System, a proven solution designed to deliver long‑term waterproofing and structural reliability.

The process began with a thorough clean of all existing gutters. Removing debris and contaminants is vital for achieving strong adhesion and ensuring the new liner performs effectively. Once cleaned, the gutters were prepared for installation of the Weatherfast system. A purpose‑made liner was supplied and fitted across approximately 112 linear metres of guttering. All joints, outlets and stop ends were heat‑welded to create a seamless, watertight finish that can withstand standing water, thermal movement and the demanding conditions of a commercial roof.

As with all stages of the project, the team ensured that all waste materials were removed from site upon completion, leaving the gutters fully refurbished and ready to perform.

The final stage of the refurbishment involved treating the metal roof surfaces and installing a high‑performance coating system with a 25‑year warranty. This long‑term protective solution is designed to extend the life of the roof, improve weather resistance and reduce future maintenance requirements.

The roof was fully prepared to ensure optimal adhesion. All cut edge corrosion was treated meticulously, addressing areas where sheet edges had begun to deteriorate due to exposure. Once preparation was complete, the 25‑year coating system was applied across all metal roof surfaces. This advanced system provides exceptional waterproofing, UV stability and corrosion resistance, ensuring the roof remains protected for decades.
