Roydon Resource Recovery, Swinton

A full external refurbishment transformed multiple elevations at Roydon Resource Recovery, combining targeted cladding repairs with a long‑life protective coating system to restore performance and appearance across the site.

Roydon Resource Recovery is a core part of the Roydon Group, operating as a specialist in the recycling and responsible management of waste materials. From its fully licensed Swinton facility, the company handles a wide range of recyclable streams including plastics, paper, cardboard, metals and WEEE, working both within the UK and internationally. The site features extensive dry‑storage capacity and operates under strict Environment Agency regulations, ensuring that all materials are processed to recognised environmental and quality standards. With a commitment to sustainability, compliance and long‑term partnerships across industrial, commercial and post‑consumer sectors, Roydon Resource Recovery plays a vital role in supporting the circular economy and reducing environmental impact.

Roydon Resource Recovery in Swinton required a comprehensive programme of external refurbishment to restore the condition, performance and appearance of several key elevations across its facility. The building had experienced a combination of age‑related deterioration, impact damage and weathering, particularly around loading bay doors and areas where previous installations had left openings or weakened sections of cladding. Cladding Coatings was appointed to deliver a full package of wall repairs, replacement cladding, and long‑life protective coatings to ensure the building remained structurally sound, visually consistent and fully protected for years to come.

The project began with a detailed survey of the building’s external envelope. Multiple elevations required treatment, and the client sought a solution that would not only repair the existing issues but also provide a uniform finish across the site. Several elevations were identified as requiring full onsite spraying, using a robust 15‑year protective system. This approach ensured long-term resistance to weathering, UV exposure and industrial environmental conditions.

Before work began on site, we also produced a full digital mock‑up of the proposed colour scheme, allowing the client to visualise the finished appearance and explore alternative colour options before confirming their final choice.

Each elevation was prepared meticulously, with surfaces cleaned, degreased and inspected before the coating system was applied. The result was a consistent, modern finish that significantly enhanced the building’s appearance while delivering durable protection.

One elevation required a different approach, as the guttering was the primary concern. This section was thoroughly cleaned to restore proper water flow and prevent future blockages or overflow issues. Addressing the guttering was essential to maintaining the integrity of the newly coated walls and preventing water ingress.

One of the most technically detailed aspects of the project involved repairing damage above three loading doors. These areas had suffered from impact and wear, leaving the existing sheets and drip flashings compromised. The team carefully removed the damaged materials, ensuring that surrounding cladding remained intact. New purpose‑made plastisol‑coated steel sheets and flashings were manufactured to match the existing profile and colour, allowing the repaired sections to blend seamlessly with the rest of the building. This precision was particularly important around one door, where new sheets, a drip flashing and a jamb flashing were required to restore the structural and visual integrity of the opening.

Rainwater management was another key element of the refurbishment. Two new 100mm grey UPVC downpipes were supplied and installed, running from gutter level to ground level with all necessary fittings. These were complemented by additional 150mm downpipe sections to replace missing or damaged lower sections. Ensuring effective drainage was essential to protecting the newly coated elevations and preventing future deterioration.

The building also contained several redundant openings and small roller shutters that no longer served a functional purpose. These were removed to improve the building’s thermal performance, security and appearance. Three small shutters near Door 5 were carefully stripped out, and new galvanised steel rails were installed to support replacement cladding. Plastisol‑coated steel sheets were then fitted to close off the openings completely, with matching drip flashings added to maintain consistency with the surrounding façade. This process not only improved the building’s appearance but also eliminated potential points of water ingress.

Adjacent to this area, a larger section of wall measuring approximately 11 metres by 2.7 metres required full replacement. The existing cladding was removed, and new single‑skin coated steel cladding was installed, complete with cap flashings, drip flashings and corner closures. This ensured the entire section was fully sealed, structurally sound and visually aligned with the rest of the refurbished elevations. Additional replacement sheets were also supplied and fitted where required across the building to address isolated areas of deterioration.

Throughout the project, our team worked with precision and care to ensure all repairs, replacements and coatings were completed to the highest standard. The combination of new cladding, targeted repairs and a long‑life protective coating system has transformed the external condition of Roydon Resource Recovery’s facility. The building now benefits from improved durability, enhanced weather resistance and a refreshed, professional appearance that reflects the company’s operational standards.
