The Fraser Centre in Swindon presented a unique and challenging project for our team, involving the re-coating of over 700m² of external wall, Micro rib cladding panels. Due to the nature of the coating requirements, this task required precision, expertise, and a tailored approach to meet the client’s needs while delivering a high-quality finish in compliance with our rigorous standards.

Project Scope and Challenges

The external walls of the Fraser Centre were constructed using Kingspan QuadCore AWP Wall Panels. These panels featured a 1000mm Micro-Rib profile and came with varying insulation specifications, including 74mm insulation on certain sections and a 150mm insulation core in others. The micro-rib texture, while aesthetically appealing, posed its own challenges.

Initially, the client explored the possibility of cladding wrapping the panels to refresh the building’s appearance. However, due to the textured surface of the micro-rib profile, wrapping was deemed unsuitable. Instead, we proposed the use of a specialist cladding coating solution, which not only overcame this limitation but also provided a more durable and long-lasting finish.

Bespoke Coating Solution

To achieve the client’s desired look and meet the building’s technical specifications, we implemented a 15-year guarantee coating system. This solution assured the client of the durability, reliability, and weather-resistant properties of the finish. Our team of experts worked meticulously to ensure every detail of this system was perfectly applied, maintaining both functional and aesthetic integrity.

The colour scheme was another critical component of the project. A range of colours were selected, including RAL 7035, RAL 000 55 00, 3005 G 20Y, 3005 G 80Y, 4010 G 70Y, 5040 Y, and 5020 G 50Y. These colours were carefully mapped and assigned to specific panels using the technical drawings provided. Our team paid close attention to precision when matching the colours to their designated panels, in line with the client’s vision.

Access and Application

Given the height and design of the Fraser Centre, scissor lift access was used extensively throughout the project. This equipment afforded our team safe and efficient access to all areas of the external walls, ensuring that the coating application was thorough and consistent.

The micro-rib texture of the Kingspan panels required a specialist approach during the preparation and coating phase. Our teams began by thoroughly cleaning and preparing the panels to ensure the best possible adhesion of the coating. Next, the cladding coating system was applied with precision, taking into account the unique contours and texture of the micro-ribbed surface.
