Hanson Springs acknowledged that their cladding was showing signs of deterioration and if left this would only worsen and become a larger problem. The company approached Cladding Coatings for assistance, and we were able to visit the site and provide our recommendations to refurbish the exterior.

The project brief was to refurbish and protect the exterior cladding of Hanson Springs’ four-elevation facility, along with its office building windows, doors, and three attached containers. The transformation also extended to the corroded steel beams under the canopy and involved meticulous preparation and painting of all elements. The chosen Anthracite Grey colour scheme offered a modern touch, drastically altering the building’s appearance.

Initially we provided a free digital mock up so the client could see the colour choices on the cladding before we started on site. They had considered Merlin Grey but chose the Anthracite Grey option after seeing the visual representation. The mock up helped to make this decision and was a vital element in this project.

Digital Mock-Up for Colour Selection: Before commencement, Cladding Coatings provided a free digital mock-up, allowing Hanson Springs to visualise the Anthracite Grey finish. This service facilitated an informed decision-making process, ensuring client satisfaction with the final colour choice over the initially considered Merlin Grey.

Our teams worked on site around the existing operations and were able to prepare and re-coat the external metal cladding using our 15 Year Guarantee System in Anthracite Grey.

During the manufacturing process at the facility, small metal shavings are released into the environment and collected in special containers. However, tiny metal particles sometimes escape and settle onto external structures, such as the building’s cladding sheets. Over time, exposure to oxygen and moisture caused these particles to rust and attach themselves to the metal cladding, leading to visible corrosion. In this case it was an extreme case of oxidisation due to the nature of the operations carried out at this premises.

Challenges Faced

Corroded Structures: The 16 steel beams under the building’s canopy showed significant corrosion, necessitating thorough surface preparation and specialised coating applications.

Accessibility Issues: Some areas, particularly around the plant equipment at the rear, were challenging to access. Scaffolding was required for the rear and both gables above the roof to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Weather Conditions: The unpredictable British weather posed scheduling challenges, requiring flexible planning to ensure optimal conditions for coating application.

The transformation of Hanson Springs’ facility was amazing it provided aesthetic enhancement, with the Anthracite Grey cladding provided a sleek, modern look, making the building appear new and significantly enhancing its curb appeal.
