Former Halfords, Hull

This empty unit required a complete re-coat and rebranding ready for the new tenant. It needed to be made secure and work was carried out to roof, walls and internal areas.

Cold winter weather in central Hull saw our Cladding Coatings team battle challenging conditions to complete a large cladding restoration job to transform a former site for a brand new tenant.

When your property is set to welcome a new tenant, it needs to be completely removed of the former occupier’s branding to make the new business stand out for the right reasons. It’s the challenge our team took on back in January 2021 in Hull, East Yorkshire, where we worked with the property landlord to convert a Former Halfords unit ready to become a JTF store.

A large unit like this one needed a careful and thorough assessment of work, and extensive refurbishment and cladding restoration work was needed to make the site safe, secure and appealing. After we attended the site for a free on-site survey, we provided a fast quotation in extensive detail for our client, before we set to work.

Working through winter weather

With JTF hoping to open the store in time as soon as possible so as not to further limit their trading, we arrived on site – despite the weather. The challenging weather conditions in the run up to Christmas presented some initial difficulties with a new products we were using. Yet they were certainly not problems our experienced team were unable to overcome.

Understanding the climate, we used Tikkurila Temadur 20: a polyurethane paint containing anti-corrosive pigments. Firstly, we prepared the unit by washing, mechanically abrading and spot priming, before onsite spraying.

The final finish was a primed coat, with topcoats, to make sure the cold temperatures did not hinder our January completion date for our client and the high standard of finish was not compromised.

Roof cladding and industrial guttering refurbishment

Metal roof coating was a key part of the job at the new JTF site. The roof was showing extensive signs of damage, yet as the store would house a high volume of contents the roof had to be secure to prevent both internal and external problems. As such, we needed to install safety netting, an access tower, and edge protection to the apex of the roof. This was so our team, and our client, could be completely safe working at height.

Our team treated all cut edge corrosion and spot corrosion with our tried and tested Tor Edge Protect. We also replaced 45 outer roof light skins, and cleaned inner skin from the roof side only – adding essential rooflight refurbishment services to the project scope.

Finally, industrial guttering cleaning finished the external roof maintenance element of the job. We cleaned our debris from all three gutters, disposing of gutter waste, and soft jet wash cleaned the gutters for a polished and high-performance finish.

Repairing and recoating exterior wall cladding

The external wall cladding also needed a great deal of cladding restoration work. Our onsite spraying team sprayed all four cladding elevations with our Tikkurila Temadur 20. We also needed to attend to the four steel columns, prepare and paint five fire doors and frames, using our tried and tested paint systems, which have exceptional anti-corrosion properties.

The doors on the front elevation were also showing significant signs of wear. Our team provided industrial cladding services to clad the new front door to support the new cladding, including installing all matching supports and flashings. Wall cladding repair work was also needed to secure the property against any further damage.

A breadth of services with advice and project planning

It wasn’t only the exterior of the property that needed our expert attention. Our interior decoration services were also called upon to prepare and paint the inside steel work, changing it from a bold red to a grey that formed part of the JTF branding. We hired mewps to complete this work, taking care of one more thing to give our client total peace of mind.

A job of this scale called upon the full spectrum of the services we can provide here at Cladding Coatings. This meant some of our less commonly-known services were also carried out on this project. These included roof flue removal, blanking off roof flue pipe holes, and supplying and fitting quilt insulation. For more information about these services, have a chat with our team.

As we pride ourselves on our building maintenance expertise, we were also able to advise the client on best safety approaches and good practice, adding in costs for any issues we could foresee in advance. This meant we left both the property landlord and JTF with no nasty surprises. Our quote also included a projection of how we’d work alongside other contractors on site, such as heating engineers, to ensure a thorough project plan was in place for our client.

Naturally, despite the extensive work on site, our work included carefully clearing away all debris and redundant materials, leaving the site clean and tidy once the project was completed – ready for JTF to move in with success.
