Dowlow Quarry, Buxton

Repair and refurbishment fo these modular buildings was a unique project for our team but the results were outstanding.

Breedon Gorup’s modular buildings sited at Dowlow Quarry, buxton had been showing signs of wear and tear. Cladding Coatings were called in to carry out some necessary repair work to the modular buildings to ensure they looked smart, were safe for operation and would last for many years to come without the need to replace the buildings. Our teams coated the existing metal cladding to refresh the exterior and protect the metal long term by using a leading paint system.

Breedon Group is a leading vertically-integrated construction materials group operating in the UK and Ireland. They provide essential products and services to the construction supply chain. The group needed their buildings to represent the quality products and services that they successfully offer and mirror the high standards that they work to.

To enable us to quote for this project accurately, we worked directly with the client to establish the exact improvements they were trying to achieve to their building and its appearance. Armed with our vast experience, we put forth a comprehensive recommendation for the necessary works and delivered an accurate quote encompassing the suggested products, services, and timelines.

A detailed site survey was carried out by our surveyor, allowing us to measure the conditions and specific needs of the building. Once Breedon approved the proposal and a start date, our teams efficiently gained access to the quarry site. Demonstrating flexibility, we arranged our operations to align seamlessly with Breedon’s schedule, ensuring minimal interruption to their business activities.

The Renovation: Technical Expertise and Aesthetic Finesse

Initiating the project, we laid down galvanised steel secondary framing beneath the buildings, forming a sturdy foundation for the new cladding. We installed Single Skin Plastisol Coated profiled steel cladding sheets across a 96-linear-meter perimeter. To reinforce longevity, we adopted the Tor Elastaseal Coatings system with a decade-long guarantee, covering all metallic cladding walls and exterior surfaces, an area totalling 684m2.

Colour-consistency is a subtle yet potent symbol of attention to detail. Hence, we utilised a colour matching service, resulting in a choice of Merlin Grey, coherent with the Breedon brand. Our skilled teams accessed even the most elevated sections of the structure with cherry pickers, abiding by stringent health and safety standards.

Additionally, the ancillary structures like the external staircase received an overhaul, with a proprietary steel paint that aligned with the building’s new look. Understanding the importance of practicality, we formed two access panels to facilitate effortless maintenance.

The Outcome: Quality and Durability

Upon project completion, our team ensured a spotless site, clearing all debris and remnants. Throughout the process, Cladding Coatings upheld a benchmark of professionalism to ensure Breedon’s satisfaction.

The transformed buildings now do more than just look renewed; they stand resilient against the British weather’s caprices, projecting the high quality that Breedon embodies.

Lessons for Facilities Managers

This case study shows how critical meticulous planning, flexibility, and technical expertise are important in facilities management. As managers looking to reflect a brand’s quality through physical infrastructure, this project serves as a good example of how to approach building renovations.

It underlines the importance of:

  • Clear communication and understanding the client’s vision
  • Tailoring services to minimise operational disruptions
  • Employing the right technology and materials for lasting results
  • Adhering to safety and regulatory standards
  • Ensuring aesthetic consistency with the brand image

Breedon’s restored modular buildings now stand as a tangible testament to the group’s standing — durable, high-quality, and aesthetically appealing, much like the materials and services they provide.

The foundation of successful refurbishment often resides in the details — from the initial survey to the final brushstroke. It is in these nuances that a building’s narrative is preserved and a company’s standards celebrated. Contact us to discuss how we can help yo uwith your refurbishment project.
