Metsa Wood, Widnes
Wooden Cladding Coating to refurbish the facade, update the colour scheme and extend the lifetime of the external cladding.
A recent office external repair and refurbishment project saw the Cladding Coatings team working on a wood-cladded façade and using a new wood-flex timber paint system to great success.
Always keen to take on, and excel in, any challenge, our Cladding Coatings team recently completed a wooden clad office refurbishment project for client, Metsä Wood, in Widnes, Cheshire.
Metsä Wood provides premium-quality wood products for the distribution, industrial and construction industries. The wood they use is completely traceable from sustainable northern forests, and their main products include laminated veneer lumber, spruce plywood, and birch.
New system installation
Unsurprisingly, the Metsä Wood office building was clad in wood. Though we have a wealth of experience coating and repairing different forms of cladding, including Cedral weatherboard and timber, we recognised a new system on the market would be perfect for this project: Wethertex.
Wethertex OT25 Wood-Flex Timber paint has a number of properties that make it excellent for cladding coating a wooden cladding façade. Wood substrates naturally experience high-movement, yet the paint is high flexible; therefore, it won’t crack as the building moves. It is quick-drying and silicone-resin based, meaning it’s highly-protective against water, mould and mildew. It can also be applied by brush, roller or spray. (Find out more about this latest system and its properties in our approved paint installation portfolio here).
Smooth and efficient application
Armed with our approved use of the Wethertex system, we could prepare the exterior wooden cladding of the Metsä Wood office building ready for repainting. The total external cladding area covered 420m2 light cladding and 120m2 dark cladding, each shade needing specific attention at differing heights.
For wooden cladding, this cladding cleaning and preparation process takes even more time, skills and expertise. First, we needed to power or hand sand the external cladding surface, the rinse it – ready for a smooth application.
Next, the first coat of the water-based exterior wood care paint was applied. We then filled in any areas needed to make sure every inch of the property received a smooth paint application, before sanding again as necessary and applying a finishing coat of Wethertex for ultimate cladding protection and an opaque, satin finish.
Care and expertise
Health and safety is our priority in every single thing we do. At Metsä Wood, this was no exception, and our health and safety commitment was one our client truly shared. Just as we do at Cladding Coatings, Metsä Wood had strict health and safety measures and place, and naturally wanted to check at regular stages they were being adhered to. Thanks to our years of expertise and ongoing commitment to health and safety, our client was happy with our health and safety commitment at every stage of the process.
Our office commercial painting and cladding coating experience gave our team a great advantage on this project. It meant that, whilst the system was new, our understanding of the building type and its usage was well-learnt. We could draw on our office refurbishment and repair experience to bring our expertise to the client’s project.
Take a look at our work at Metsä Wood in progress, and see before and after images below. As you can tell, what began as a dull façade needing care is now a smart, bright and professional building the client is delighted with.
